Wasps back on track with win over Bayonne

London Wasps got their Amlin Challenge Cup campaign back on track with a home win over Bayonne, putting them back on top of Pool 3 in the process.

Wasps started their hundredth game in European competition in some style, coming close to a try with just a minute on the clock when Bayonne failed to deal with a Nicky Robinson high kick. John Hart was involved in the move twice and had a score only ruled out by the TMO.

Hart remained a key figure for the hosts and was instrumental in the game's opening try. A quickly tapped free kick sent the forward on a powerful surge towards the line which was finished off by Sam Jones, again following consultation with the TMO.

Robinson added the extras and a penalty to give Wasps a 10-0 lead, although the Adams Park outfit suffered a blow when Hart was forced off by an apparent injury. Benjamin Boyet's penalty then got Bayonne on the scoreboard, and then Boyet and Robinson exchanged penalties before Sione Lauaki muscled his way over in the corner to put the game back in the balance.

Leading by just two points at the break, Wasps were given breathing space again by Elliott Daly's long range penalty, and as the forecast rain closed in the hosts eased further clear thanks to Robinson's continued accuracy from the tee.

David Roumieu's yellow card put Bayonne at a further disadvantage and Wasps continued to hold the Basques at arms length to record a third Amlin Challenge Cup success from their four matches.
