Alex Lozowski pulled the strings as Wasps bounced back from a dramatic defeat to Sale Sharks last weekend with an impressive bonus-point victory over London Irish in the LV= Cup.
The 21-year-old fly-half kicked 23 points, converting all four of his side’s tries as Simon McIntyre, Josh Bassett, Guy Thompson and Elliot Daly touched down for the hosts at Adams Park.
The Exiles led 19-16 at half-time through four penalties from fly-half Myles Dorrian and Leo Halavatau’s converted try but added only a further penalty from Dorrian after the break.
A strong performance by Wasps in the second half was capped by Daly’s late score as Dai Young’s side got their LV= Cup campaign back on track after narrowly missing out 32-29 against Sale in round one.
Although Irish remained in contention during a first-half kicking duel between Lozowski and Dorrian, their lack of creativity after the interval ensured their second consecutive loss in the competition after defeat to Leicester Tigers last weekend.
Dorrian opened the scoring for the visitors five minutes in with his first penalty after Wasps were penalised from a line out.
It did not take Wasps long to draw level as Lozowski landed a penalty from over 40 metres out three minutes later.
However, they were behind again as Dorrian scored an easy penalty soon after with Wasps working hard to get back in the game.
In the 18th minute, Wasps were able to force their way through for McIntyre barge over and Lozowski converted to give them a four-point lead.
The young No.10 was able to extend Wasps’ lead through a penalty 25 minutes in, with his opposite number scoring another penalty of his own moments later.
Lozowski then missed a penalty after Irish were penalised for offside but made amends by landing another kick from the tee soon after.
The eighth penalty of the game went the way of Irish and Dorrian scored his fourth of the day to bring the deficit back to four points.
The Exiles managed to go in front just before half time as Halavatau crossed over after some neat build-up play and Dorrian converted.
The second half started with Irish 19-16 ahead and the visitors went further in front a few minutes in to the half thanks to another Dorrian penalty.
Wasps responded well though and were able to turn the game around as Lozowski burst through a gap in the Exiles’ line to send Bassett over, with the fly-half adding the extras.
Both teams took the opportunity to make a number of substitutions in the second half and found it difficult to find a rhythm after the early points.
Wasps were then presented a vital opportunity through another penalty and Lozowski continued his sublime kicking form to nail the three points.
The visitors saw the size of their task increase as prop Jamie Hagan was sent to the sin bin on 69 minutes.
A ruthless Wasps pack took advantage soon after as they drove over from a line out to allow Thompson to touch down before Lozowski added another two.
A counter attack late on saw the fly-half burst through the midfield to feed Ben Jacobs, who released fellow centre Daly to run in for the try, with Lozowski once again unerring with the conversion.
