Wales star Thomas wants Singha 7s success with Cardiff Blues

Adam Thomas may have played 7s all over the world, but the Wales star is fully focussed on ensuring Cardiff Blues clinch the Singha Premiership Rugby 7s Series crown at the Ricoh Arena on Sunday.

Former Wales 7s captain Thomas has played more than 30 World Rugby 7s Series tournaments, reaching a World Cup quarter-final in 2013, but the Blues man is intent on replicating the success of regional rivals Newport Gwent Dragons by clinching Singha 7s glory.

The Blues are utilising every ounce of experience at their disposal, with Wales 7s core players Thomas, Ben Roach and Owen Jenkins joined in the Singha 7s Final squad by the experienced Ethan Davies.

Richard Hodges’ side made a perfect start to their Singha 7s campaign at BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park, winning three games from three including a last-gasp triumph over the Dragons.

And Thomas is keen to extend that success – starting in the quarter-finals against a Sale Sharks' side that possesses eight-try group stage record-breaker Paolo Odogwu.

“It would be great to go in and emulate the Dragons by winning the tournament and I know it sounds like a cliché, but we just need to take that game by game,” he said.

“The Singha 7s has been around for a while, but it was my first opportunity to play for the Blues as a 7s player, and the group at Cardiff was really the reason that you play rugby.

“I wasn’t really sure how it was going to go, but on that Friday night the boys put in a massive performance. The best thing was the way that the Wales 7s players and the Blues' guys gelled, the young guys really stood up and took their chance.

“It is nice to do something a bit different, playing against the teams from England we’re just very keen to get out there against Sale Sharks.”

The Blues are set to lose a few promising youngsters to international duty, but Thomas is certain that their loss will be more than compensated for with some vastly experienced 7s players returning to the fold.

“We have lost a couple of the youngsters who are heading off to South Africa with Wales U18s, but we have four or five guys coming in from clubs," he explained.

“On paper we have even more 7s experience and we should do well if we can translate that onto the field."

Eight teams will play for the first silverware of the season in the Singha Premiership Rugby 7s Series Finals from 2pm at the Ricoh Arena, Coventry on Sunday 7 August. Click here for tickets.
