Ford flying the flag for the old school fly-half

The five-man shortlist for Aviva Player of the Season has been revealed, writes Bloggers’ Bench member Andrew Deering.

Four Englishmen have made the list with Jonathan Joseph at 24, the oldest to earn a nomination. Joseph has excelled for Bath and England this season, just like his team-mate, George Ford, who has also made the list.

Ford, just 22, has become the undisputed focal point of both Bath and England this term with his old throw-back style catching the eye of fans, pundits and players alike this season. The stand-off has been praised for his almost unrivalled attacking potential and his ability to play devastating heads up rugby.

The former IRB Young Player of the Year stands at just 5ft10 and weighs in at 13 stone 3lb. These are not figures uncommon to the normal man in the street. However, Ford plays in a super-sized environment week-in and week-out, out-witting men who dwarf him physically but not in the skills department.
