Wasps are pleased to announce that back row Alex Rieder has signed a new contract with the club ahead of the 2017/18 season.
Rieder, whose versatility allows him to play anywhere in the backrow, joined Wasps ahead of the 2015/16 campaign and has made 24 appearances for the club, including 17 appearances already this season.
Since arriving at Wasps, Rieder has continued to demonstrate the form that led to him being nominated for Championship Player of the Year in 2014/15.
Speaking about extending his stay at Wasps, he said: “To be able to extend my contract at Wasps is a great honour. To not only be able to play for a club with such an amazing history, but also to potentially contribute to it, is a privilege.
“The past couple of years have been the highlight of my career and the opportunity to help the squad try to push for silverware, whilst playing alongside some of the best players in the world, has been and will continue to be a dream come true.”
Wasps’ Director of Rugby Dai Young added: “Alex is a really valuable member of our squad and we’re delighted he has re-committed to the club. You always know what you are going to get from Alex; he carries strongly, creates opportunities in attack and is physical in defence. He’s industrious around the pitch, always giving you 100% in his performances, and he’s really stepped up for us every time he has worn the Wasps shirt, particularly during the international period.”
There is also good news for Wasps’ Academy players Connor Eastgate, the Scotland U20s fly-half, who has also extended his stay with the club, while Tom Willis and Will Porter have been awarded Senior Academy squad contracts, having impressed during their time with Wasps’ Junior Academy. Tom will join brother Jack in training with the first team squad next season.
Meanwhile, Wasps Senior Academy wing Tom Howe will join Worcester Warriors next season. The 21-year-old made his Wasps debut in the Anglo Welsh Cup match against Leicester Tigers in 2013 and has made 13 appearances in black and gold.
Speaking about the planned move, Howe said: “I’d like to thank Wasps for the opportunities they have given me during my time in the Academy and I will look forward to the new chapter with Worcester Warriors when it starts in the summer.”
Wasps also confirm today a loan agreement for prop Tom Bristow with Bristol Rugby until the end of the season, barring injuries, to enable the loosehead to get more game-time.
