Match Reaction: Bath Rugby 31-31 Gloucester Rugby

There’s been some memorable West Country derbies over the years but all who were at the Rec this weekend won’t be forgetting this one in a while.

Gloucester were ruthlessly superb in the first half and a double for Ruan Ackermann, plus a try for Callum Braley, gave them a big half-time advantage despite Semesa Rokoduguni’s effort.

But unlikely hero Tom Dunn fired back with a double of his own, meaning Elliott Stooke’s late score looked to have won it until Matt Banahan, on his return to the Rec, stepped in with his moment to remember.

Man of the match – Danny Cipriani

Banahan shared the limelight with Danny Cipriani, and indeed many others at the Rec, with the fly-half catching the eye with another superb performance.

His disguised pass put Ackermann through a lovely hole, and speedy long pass out to Jason Woodward helped create Banahan’s leveller.

Try of the match

The second try of the match and second score for Ackermann was a thing of beauty, for that telling moment when the defence knows they’ve been duped.

Cipriani takes the ball on the 10-metre line and has two runners, opts to pop it in front of Ed Slater to hit Ackermann running an excellent line, and the big man is unstoppable at that pace.

Moment of the match

The match was filled with so many but Banahan grabbed the moment of the match with his equalling effort two minutes from time.

You just knew the giant winger would score on his return to the Rec but few could predict that it would come in such dramatic circumstances, with another sizzling pass from Cipriani doing the damage and Banahan applying the finish.

What they said:

Bath director of rugby Todd Blackadder: “”I thought Gloucester played really well, and at 21-0 down it was a real character test for our players.

“They had to dig deep to come back and put us in a position to win it, so I am really proud of them.”

Gloucester head coach Johann Ackermann: “It’s my second time experiencing this game here at the Rec. Last year it was a late kick to win it and this year it’s like this.

“It was a quality game to watch and brilliant for the neutral.”
