Gloucester Rugby lift Singha Premiership Rugby 7s Plate

Gloucester Rugby were victorious in the Singha Premiership Rugby 7s Plate final after a 22-12 success over reigning European Champions Saracens.

Harry Randall and two Mason Tonks tries put the Cherry and Whites in control with a 17-0 lead at the break, and their advantage was extended by Ben Vellacott’s score early in the second-half.

Rotimi Segun pulled one score back for Saracens with Tom Whiteley following him over in the right corner shortly afterwards to make the score 22-12 with three minutes left.

But the Cherry and Whites were able to hold on to lift the Plate trophy at Franklin’s Gardens.

After defeat to Exeter Chiefs in the Cup quarter-finals, Saracens started brightly in the first Plate semi-final with Rueben Bird-Tulloch and Whiteley going over to give them an early 10-0 lead.

Aaron Reed pulled one back for Sale Sharks, who had lost to Wasps in their Cup quarter-final, to reduce the deficit by five going into half-time.

Tom Griffiths scored two tries in quick succession to put the result beyond doubt before Anthony Bingham and Matthew Sturgess secured late consolation tries for the Sharks.

Captain Whiteley went over for his second try of the game late-on to give Saracens a 31-15 victory and progress into the Plate final.

In the second Plate semi-final, Worcester Warriors’ Huw Taylor scored two tries either side of scores from Gloucester Rugby’s Ollie Thorley and Aaron Hinkley dotting down.

Will Butler put the Warriors 15-12 ahead at the break but a long-range effort from Harry Randall down the left flank put the Cherry and Whites back ahead with three minutes to play.

Gloucester’s Will Safe also went over in the corner before Warriors’ Alex Hearle dotted down under the posts to bring the score to 24-22 with just 30 seconds left.

And there was just enough time for Tom Vellacott to dummy a kick into touch before sprinting down the left wing to book Gloucester’s place in the Plate final.
