Danny Care selects his XV from Round Three of the Premiership Rugby Cup
The penultimate round of the Premiership Rugby Cup pool stage offered another feast of breath-taking action as all 12 teams looked to heighten their chances of making the knockout stage.
With the impending return of Gallagher Premiership Rugby later this month, the weekend’s ties saw a number of key individuals stand up to be counted as they looked to cement a spot in their side’s XV.
And with just the derby games remaining before the semi-finals commence in the cup competition, England international Danny Care has been pondering over week three’s best performers.
Three Exeter Chiefs representatives are included in the side following their win at Worcester Warriors, with Chiefs skipper Jack Yeandle leading from the front at hooker, while Tom O’Flaherty is named on the wing and Matt Kvesic is rewarded for his late try at No 8.
The Warriors’ Tom Howe was unfortunate to find himself on the losing side at Sixways despite notching a hat-trick of tries, and lines up opposite O’Flaherty.
Harlequins’ England star Mike Brown is named between the two wingers after he marked his first appearance of the season with a try, while fellow Quins and Red Rose internationals Chris Robshaw and Joe Marchant take the openside flanker and outside centre spots respectively.
Besides Quins, Sale Sharks are the only other team to have maintained their 100 percent record in the competition, and lock Bryn Evans is rewarded for his lung-busting display with a place alongside Leicester’s Calum Green in the second row.
The Tigers secured an impressive win over arch-rivals Bath Rugby, and Tom Hardwick – who kicked eight of their 18 points – is named at fly-half, with Greg Bateman in at loosehead.
Josh Ibuanokpe completes the front row after helping defending Gallagher Premiership Rugby champions Saracens beat Northampton Saints in a repeat of last year’s Premiership Rugby Cup final.
Sarries’ Nick Tompkins scored three tries at Franklin’s Gardens and claims a spot in the midfield, while Wasps’ Sam Wolstenholme and Jack Willis complete the team at scrum-half and blindside respectively.
