Match officials confirmed for tonight’s Premiership Rugby 7s
A blockbuster weekend of Premiership Rugby 7s will kick off the new domestic season at Franklin’s Gardens tonight – and the officials who will oversee the action have been revealed.
Alex Thomas, Charlie Gayther, Joe James and George Selwood will be in the middle for the ‘Olympic-style’ version of the tournament, which takes place on Friday and Saturday (September 13-14).
There are also several familiar names among the assistant referees, most notably former Red Roses international La Toya Mason, who made 70 appearances for England.
Mason represented England at the 2010 Women’s Rugby World Cup before also being named in the squad for the 2014 edition, which ended in the Red Roses being crowned champions.
The 35-year-old is the first former England women’s Test player to officiate at a Premiership Rugby event, following hot on the heels of pioneering work done by ex-Ireland international Joy Neville in the Pro 14 and beyond. Mason will not be the first ex-player to officiate in the Premiership Rugby 7s, though, with Richard Haughton and Nick Wood both making the transition after ending their playing careers.
The other assistant referees who will be running the lines in Northampton will be Sam Phillips, Gregg Dawson, Hamish Grant, Iain Kiy, James Clarke, Michael Woods and Nia Woods.
Meanwhile, Mike Hamlin and Nick Edwards will be the time-keepers over the two days of competition, which will see all 12 Premiership Rugby sides do battle.
It’s the third year in a row Northampton Saints have hosted the event, with Saracens looking to defend the title they won last year after beating Wasps in the showpiece final.
