Richard Beck joins Wasps Academy coaching set-up
Wasps are pleased to announce that Richard Beck has joined the Club as Academy Coach ahead of the 2019/20 season.
The 29-year-old joins from Yorkshire Carnegie, after a 13-year association with the Leeds-based club.
Beck joined the formerly-named Leeds Carnegie Academy in 2006 before earning his debut for the club in the 2009/10 season.
He went on to enjoy ten seasons at Carnegie, playing 132 matches, crossing for 14 tries, and was named as Supporters’ Player of the Year in 2017/18.
In December the 29-year-old was forced to retire on medical grounds and has since been working with the Carnegie Academy where he has been helping the next generation.
Beck will now be reunited with former teammate and Wasps Academy Manager Jon Pendlebury, as well as former Italy star Andrea Masi and Matt Williams as part of the Academy coaching set-up.
Wasps Academy Manager Pendlebury added: “With Matt Everard stepping up to support the first-team coaching set-up, we’re delighted that we’ve been able to replace him with someone of Rich’s calibre.
“I have known Richard since he first broke through as a young player at 18 and what always stood out in Richard’s career and approach, was his attention to detail and inquisitive mind as a player.
“What is even more impressive is the amount of coaching he has achieved already whilst only having retired six months ago. Richard is halfway through his RFU Level 4 coaching award and a more than competent coach with a MSc in Sports Science.
“His coaching career includes teams for the Yorkshire County leagues, Leeds University BUCS first-team, along with coaching part-time whilst playing and then full-time with Yorkshire Carnegie’s first-team in the Championship and the younger Carnegie Academy players over the past two years.”
Beck added: “I am very excited to work with such a talented group of players within the Wasps Academy.
“Having spent my entire playing career at Yorkshire Carnegie, I am looking forward to a new challenge and working in a different environment.
“I would like to thank all the supporters at Carnegie who have supported myself and the team over the past 13 years.”
