Match Reaction: Bath Rugby 23-16 Leicester Tigers

Bath Rugby completed a fine holiday double as they followed up victory over Wasps with a 23-16 win over Leicester Tigers.

Jonny May had opened the scoring after just two minutes but Bath responded well with tries from Jamie Roberts and Nathan Catt to lead 15-7 at the break.

Ruaridh McConnochie scored a third down the left and Bath were able to hold on to earn the all-important win and move up to fifth in the table.

A number of contenders on the Bath side, particularly back-row duo Sam Underhill and Francois Louw. But in the end it was Will Chudley’s control of his pack that made the difference for Bath. The former Exeter scrum-half was influential in victory over Wasps last week, and backed up that performance this weekend.

It’s been a weekend for early tries, and Jonny May’s was up there with the best of them. He and George Ford seem to read each other’s minds and it was the fly-half’s little chip that fooled the Bath defence. May was off like a shot, collected and dotted down for the perfect start.

Leading by eight points at the break, Bath saw their deficit cut to five by a George Ford penalty 15 minutes into the second half. The result was very much in the balance but that is when Ruaridh McConnochie struck. Given some space out on the left, the former Sevens star showed his finishing instinct by fending off Ellis Genge and crossing for the third Bath try.

Man of the match Will Chudley: “We had a good win last weekend and we spoke all week about backing it up. We knew what Leicester were going to bring, they had a good win last weekend so we’re happy to get the win.

“We had to keep playing, when we are at our best we play quickly and keep punching holes. Towards the end of the second half we stopped doing that a bit so you just have to keep going.”
