Mike Brown to break another Harlequins record at Newcastle Falcons

Harlequins Full-back Mike Brown will break the Club’s all-time appearance record on Saturday when he takes his place in the starting XV at Newcastle Falcons (kick-off: 15:00).

Brown broke Nick Easter’s record for most appearances in the professional era last season, but when he runs out for Quins for the 308th time at the weekend he will be breaking the all-time record set by Grahame Murray in 1973.

Brown said: “I never thought I would achieve this honour when I first started out at Quins. I was a wild card to even get in the Academy in the first place [in 2005] but here I am now and I am really proud.”

The back line has one change from the one that started Big Game against Wasps with the exciting Gabriel Ibitoye starting at Left wing while Cadan Murley has been rested.

Danny Care will captain the side in the absence of James Chisholm, who is rotated, with the in-form Alex Dombrandt moving to Number eight and Semi Kunatani joining the back row at Blindside alongside the consistently impressive Jack Clifford.

Head of Rugby Paul Gustard said: “Mike Brown thoroughly deserves every accolade he gets for all the records he has broken at this club. His career here is already remarkable and I look forward to him going on to achieve even more great things with us. He is a fierce competitor who simply loves playing for Quins and consistently delivers effort, tenacity and high levels of skill with and without the ball.

“James Chisholm has been a mainstay in the team at Number eight all season and has captained the team in the continued absence of Chris and James but like others before him he has been rotated out, allowing an opportunity to others to impress and move the jersey and the shirt on.

“We were pleased with our win over Wasps at Big Game 11 last week despite not being at our best, but we found a way to get the result through our defensive resilience and grit. We have been working hard all week on sharpening our attack, strengthening our set-piece and hardening our defence as we know Falcons are a good team, who are well coached and who, as always, will offer a stern challenge at Kingston Park.

“In order to move up this very tight Premiership we know we have to go back-to-back and get more wins on the road and that starts with the first game of 2019.”
