Match Reaction: Leicester Tigers 49-33 Newcastle Falcons
Interim Leicester Tigers head coach Geordan Murphy made it a start to remember at Welford Road with George Ford scoring 29 points in a 49-33 victory against Newcastle Falcons.
Simply too hot to handle, Leicester looked a different prospect to the side that lost to Exeter Chiefs on the opening weekend.
Racing ahead to a convincing 22-0 lead inside the first 14 minutes, there was no stopping the home side from that point as Ford oozed class with a telling contribution from the kicking tee.
Man of the match – George Ford
England head coach Eddie Jones is going to have to make some tough decisions when it comes to who starts in the Autumn tests between George Ford and Danny Cipriani.
But with an incredible 29 points contribution against last season’s semi-finalists, the Leicester man certainly staked his claim to play against New Zealand in November.
Deadly from the kicking tee, Ford was relentless at securing point after point with six penalties and another three conversions and who can forget the opening try of the game too.

Try of the match
On his first start of the season after a prolonged absence through injury, Manu Tuilagi announced his Tigers return in style. Grasping the ball on the half-way line, the centre broke through the pack to race 50 metres and secure his first try of the campaign.
Moment of the match
No moment would have made Geordan Murphy more pleased than seeing star man Ford cross the whitewash in the first minute to evaporate any pre-match nerves he may have had.
Exchanging passes with Will Spencer, Ford burrowed his way over the line to claim the first of his 29 points. From then on, there was simply no coming back for the Falcons.
What they said:
Leicester Tigers interim head coach, Geordan Murphy:
“The support I have had from the Senior players has been top-class. It says a lot about them as players and as people.
“We did a lot of good things, we’ve got the win and a bonus point but there’s a lot to look at and tidy up.
“Quality players step up. I thought a lot of the senior guys did that today.”
Newcastle Falcons head coach, Dean Richards:
“You just can’t give a team a head start like that in a league like this, and we were always going to pay for that.
“Big players made big errors, and even though we actually won the second half we still missed a boat-load of opportunities for further tries.
“We knew there was going to be a reaction from Leicester after everything that has gone on this week in terms of changing their head coach, but we didn’t go out there with the right intentions.
“We gave ourselves too much to do after that opening half-hour, by which time they were four tries up.”
