Match reaction: Dragons 33 Worcester Warriors 27

Worcester Warriors’ Anglo-Welsh Cup homes came to an end as they were edged out 33-27 at the Dragons on Friday night.

In the end, Worcester would have failed to clinch top spot in Pool Three regardless due to results elsewhere but they were unable to withstand a second-half rally from their PRO14 hosts.

Man of the match – Sam Olver

In a contest where momentum swung this way and that, fly-half Sam Olver was a dependable source of points for the Warriors, the 23-year-old kicking three conversions and two penalties.

Try of the match

Dean Hammond showed off some fine footwork to dot down for his team’s second try of the contest, the 25-year-old catching the eye after being fed by Ollie Lawrence.

Moment of the match

Worcester started the match like a house on fire and were in front with less than 30 seconds on the clock, Kurt Haupt going over the line to shellshock the Dragons after fine work from Ben Howard and Luke Baldwin.

What they said:

Warriors backs coach Sam Vesty praised the performance of his side’s younger players in Wales.

He said: “Obviously, we want to be playing for silverware but there is a bigger point in getting youth onto the pitch and if you don’t get your youth onto the pitch, it’s very hard to do it [on] Premiership weekends.

“I thought the likes of Andrew Kitchener was excellent today and to allow him the chance to put his hand up is the right thing to do for the long-term.

“Some of the younger boys I thought were outstanding.”
