Sale Sharks secure the signing of promising young prop Joe Jones

Sale Sharks have secured the signing of promising young prop Joe Jones from French club Perpignan.

The 22-year-old former Wales Under-20 and Cardiff Blues tight-head operator has signed a five-year contract with the Sharks and will join the club in the summer.

Sale Sharks have secured the signing of promising young prop Joe Jones from French club Perpignan.

Hailing from Mold in North Wales, Joe knows the Sharks well as he is a former member of the club’s famed Academy.

Joe spent two years as a youngster at Sale before subsequently joining Cardiff Blues’ Academy in 2013.

He went on to win five caps for Wales Under-20s and also spent time with RGC 1404 as well as representing both Cardiff & Pontypridd in the Principality Premiership, playing 40 games for the Blue & Blacks.

In the summer of 2016 he decided to embark on a new challenge by moving to France to join Perpignan, one of the most famous names in French rugby.

Now after two years honing his skills at Perpignan, he is set to link-up once again with Sale in the Premiership and Joe admitted he was thrilled at the prospect of returning to the Sharks.

Commenting on his decision to join Sale Joe said:

“I’m delighted to be joining Sale Sharks and effectively returning to the club where things originally started for me with the Academy a few years back,”

“I would like to thank everyone at USAP in Perpignan who helped with my progression to date that began with their very successful league-winning Espoirs (Under-23s) team to the senior side which I believe has prepared me well for what’s to follow here at the Sharks.

“Having spent the last couple of years in French rugby, the time now feels right for me to return home and I relish the chance to provide the coaches a real selection option and hopefully help the Sharks to more successes in the Premiership.

“I’m really looking forward to giving my all to ensure I maximise the opportunity Steve and his coaches have given me.”

Commenting on Joe’s signing, Sale director of rugby Steve Diamond said:

“Joe was in our Academy here a few years ago then went playing back in Wales before moving to France and he has had a really good apprenticeship.

“Now he’s coming back to join us and we see him following in the footsteps of WillGriff John. At just 22 his maturation as a prop will come and we have got big plans for Joe.

“The way that the scrum laws have gone, we need these lads to be athletes and durable as well as real physical specimens and Joe possesses all of those qualities and we are delighted to have signed him.”
