‘The Anglo-Welsh Cup means the world to us,’ says Leicester Tigers’ Thacker

Charlie Thacker says that Leicester Tigers’ young squad are treating each Anglo-Welsh Cup game like their own World Cup final.

The reigning champions are under the tutelage of coach Geordan Murphy for the tournament and got their campaign off to a winning start last weekend.

After defeating Gloucester Rugby 26-24 last weekend Saturday, things step up another level on Friday night as they face a trip to old rivals Bath Rugby.

Just over a year ago, the Tigers secured a 21-20 Anglo-Welsh Cup triumph at the Rec and Thacker is determined to repeat that success this weekend.

“You have to look at it as your opportunity to show what you do. You train like it’s a World Cup final because you have to make a good impression,” Thacker said.

“We make it really positive doing the work so everyone feels they are welcome in the environment and confident, and they’re able to try stuff.

“It’s a bit more responsibility as champions but every year, there’s different teams put out so we’ll take it as it comes.

“You don’t know how the season will go, so you have to make a good impression. If a chance in the Aviva Premiership comes, the chances are higher you’ll play.”

Centre Thacker has made seven appearances for Leicester Tigers in the past two years and put in a man-of-the-match performance against Gloucester.

The 20-year-old is the younger brother of Tigers hooker Harry Thacker, who also came through their academy set-up in the East Midlands.

And with Leicester clearly running through the centre’s veins, the youngster knows exactly how important a derby against Bath is to the Welford Road faithful.

“I think there’s always games like that, where there’s extra spice between the between the clubs,” said Thacker.

“It might be the first time some lads have played in these games and it’s good to experience what a derby game is like.

“We are all buzzing. We went there last year and got a good result – we hope to do the same this year.”
