Best social media reaction to Gloucester’s European semi-final triumph

Gloucester Rugby came out on top in the all-Aviva Premiership clash against Newcastle Falcons on Friday night to reach the final of the European Challenge Cup.

The Cherry and Whites ran in four tries to secure a 33-12 victory at Kingsholm as they reached the competition’s showpiece event for a third time in four seasons.

Cardiff Blues are the only side who stand in the way of a third Challenge Cup title for the West Country side, after seeing off Pau 16-10 in the other semi-final on Saturday at Arms Park.

But Gloucester’s passage to the final in Bilbao was not all plain sailing, with Falcons dominating the opening 20 minutes as they scored the opening try through Scott Lawson.

Star man Jason Woodward proved the difference, though, setting up the first try for Tom Marshall and assisting the fourth score by Ben Vellacott in the second half.

Lawson did grab another try for Falcons, but scores for Motu Matu’u and Billy Burns either side of the break, plus 13 points from the boot of Billy Twelvetrees proved enough for the hosts.

Here is the best of the social media reaction to Gloucester’s semi-final triumph:

There was plenty of praise for the victors after they recovered from a sluggish start to play some expansive, free-flowing rugby against Newcastle.

Despite it being a disappointing night for Falcons, they still have plenty to play for this season as they look in good shape to secure a play-off spot in the Premiership.

The Shed was in good voice as Cherry and White fans cheered their side to a famous victory.

Gloucester were quick to congratulate Cardiff Blues on their semi-final win against Pau.

A place in the final was not all that Gloucester had to celebrate over the weekend, with the Premiership side now assured a place in next season’s Champions Cup.
