World Cup dream over for Grewcock

The Bath captain suffered the hand injury during the 111-13 victory over Uruguay on Sunday, and had his worst fears confirmed by X-rays on Monday.

"Danny has broken his hand and Simon Shaw is on the way now," confirmed England coach Clive Woodward.

Shaw, presently en route to Australia having been called up as cover, will officially replace Grewcock on his arrival on Monday night.

Grewcock's latest injury is his second since England arrived in Australia, he suffered a broken toe when team-mate Ben Cohen accidentally trod on his foot during the warm-up to England's RWC opener against Georgia in Perth.

The Uruguay game was Grewcock's first appearance in the tournament after recovering from that setback.

The 30-year-old Shaw – who was first capped against Italy seven years ago – missed out behind Grewcock, Martin Johnson, Ben Kay and Martin Corry in Woodward's original squad.

At the time, Woodward described his omission as one of the toughest selection calls he has had to make during six years in charge of England.

The Wasps man will prove more than an adequate replacement, having excelled in the Zurich Premiership this season.

"I would like to thank [Wasps coach] Warren Gatland and London Wasps for their full support over this situation," said Woodward.
