Hodgson badly damaged his knee ligaments in a Six Nations game back in March, an injury which ruled him out of the World Cup.
However, the 22-year-old played nearly 40 minutes of a Sale Sharks reserve team game against Wakefield.
"It's a brilliant feeling to be back on the pitch. Considering that was my first competitive game since the injury I thought things went well," he said.
"I think I can declare myself fit and then wait for Jim Mallinder's reaction. We'll have a chat and take it from there.
"It would be great to be involved with the first team as soon as possible, but with the results we have had recently, getting back into the side might not be so easy. I'll carry on training and working on my fitness and wait for my chance."
Head coach Jim Mallinder said: "I am very happy to see him back in action again.
"He is a world-class player and you miss players like that. It is possible that he will be on the bench on Friday night, but we'll see how things go this week."
