Pountney to miss start of season

A Gallagher Premiership Rugby ball

The flanker broke his left leg after falling awkwardly in a tackle during the second half. He is currently undergoing specialist treatment but it is not yet know when he will be able to return to action.

Pountney's injury is a big blow to the Saints who were looking to the former Scotland captain to hold the fort while the squad's large international contingent are away contending the World Cup.

Pountney could well have been in Australia too, but he controversially ruled himself out of selection for Scotland earlier this year after a string of spats with Murrayfield bosses.

The Saints kick-off the new season at Sale on September 12.
