Andrews assumes Newcastle captaincy

A Gallagher Premiership Rugby ball

The 31-year-old takes over from England fly-half Jonny Wilkinson as skipper at the north-east club, who narrowly survived in the Premiership last season after a timely late rally.

Andrews impressed hugely this year after joining from South African province the Natal Sharks, and with Wilkinson being away with England during the World Cup in the early stages of the season, seemed the logical choice to take over.

He captains a squad which has seen a fairly low-key off-season in the transfer market, with Bristol lock Garath Archer and Harlequins wing Ben Gollings being the only arrivals of note.
