Back to skipper Leicester after RWC

A Gallagher Premiership Rugby ball

Back, who recently signed a new two-year deal with Leicester, was preferred to current England skipper Martin Johnson to take over from Kronfeld when the England players return from the World Cup in November.

"It's a great honour to be made captain of Leicester Tigers in my 14th season at the club," Back told his club's official website.

"I relish the opportunity to make my mark on the team, something I've been able to do to a certain extent while Johnno has been captain.

"He has been an outstanding leader – his record as captain of Leicester Tigers, England and the British Lions is just phenomenal. It's a tough act to follow but I've played alongside him in all three of those teams and hopefully have learnt plenty along the way."

Dean Richards, Leicester's Director of Rugby, told tigers.co.uk that he had a long chat with Johnson before he relieved England's star lock from the Tigers' captaincy.

"We decided that with him having such a prominent role in the World Cup this autumn, it would probably be best for all concerned if someone else was skipper this season.

"Martin has done a remarkable job over the last six seasons, and is without doubt the most successful rugby captain of the professional era.

"I know he will continue to have a massive influence both on and off the pitch for us next season."
