Rotherham swoop for Leinster hooker

A Gallagher Premiership Rugby ball

The 27-year-old has represented Ireland at Schools, U19, 21, Students, Development and 'A' level, but has not made the step up to the senior Test squad, having been understudy to current Ireland starter Shane Byrne.

A former player with St Mary's College, Smyth leaves Leinster with ringing praise from their coach Matt Williams, who said: "Peter is a remarkable young man who just lives and loves rugby. He has recovered from his illness and his recent rugby injuries.

"Peter has jumped every hurdle put in front of him, and some of these where enormous. All of us at Leinster wish nothing but the best for Smythie. We hope that Peter will return to the Leinster scene in the future."

Smyth himself – who has 28 Leinster appearances – said: "I've had a great time with Leinster they've been a tremendous help in my career, and in my rehabilitation and recovery.

"I'm delighted with the opportunity to play with Rotherham, and the new season can't come quickly enough for me. I wish Matt and all the lads all the best for their season and for the future."
