Leicester prop joins Perpignan

A Gallagher Premiership Rugby ball

The 29-year-old New Zealander has been a fringe player with Leicester during his eight-year stint with the Heineken Cup and Zurich Premiership champions, struggling for a starting spot behind England loosehead Graham Rowntree.

A former Wellington player, Freshwater represented New Zealand at Under-21 level, having previously played U19 rugby for them, also turning out for the Barbarians and the Premiership Allstars during his stay.

He joins Australia centre Daniel Herbert as an incoming foreigner to Perpignan, with England wing Dan Luger and All Black back row Scott Robertson also being linked to the club.

"I was looking to go back to New Zealand but Perpignan came up with an offer I could not refuse," Freshwater told The Leicester Mercury.

"It's a good opportunity to play rugby consistently. I have had a really good time in Leicester and made a lot of friends.

"I've given England a good crack and I have probably done what I wanted to do here and I'm looking for another challenge in this chapter of my life."
