Bayfield completes Twickenham challenge

A Gallagher Premiership Rugby ball

Zurich, sponsor of the Premiership, supported the abseil jump by the 6’10” former Northampton Saints, England and Lions lock.

Last year 1,139 people abseiled off Twickenham to create a new Guinness World Record for the greatest number of people abseiling in one day, and this year over 1,140 were needed to go one better.

Unfortunately they were 130 people short of the target number to break the existing record – but the event still raised over £200,000 for research into all forms of cancer.

Martin said, “There have been times at some of the games I’ve played in here that I’ve wanted to throw myself off the top of Twickenham but at least this time I’m going to have a rope attached and its for a great cause.  It was also nice to see Superman, Spiderman and Catwoman here today.”

On his friend, jockey Richard Dunwoody, who was also jumping for the charity, Martin said, “If weight comes into it I should have beaten him to the bottom! Thankfully they found a harness small enough for him and big enough for me.”
