He is one of three changes to the 22-strong squad as two other injured players make a return, centre Jos Baxendell and second row Dean Schofield. The players dropping out are prop Jim Thorp, hooker Johnny Roddam and flanker Richard Wilks.
Coach Jim Mallinder said: "It is good to have all three back in contention and we now have our fittest squad for some time. The only absentees through injury now are Scott Lines and Anthony Elliott.
"After suffering four successive defeats in three different competitions during December, the Sharks are keen to start the New Year with a victory to help maintain their push for a top three finish in the Premiership."
Newcastle are currently in the relegation spot but Mallinder said: "We have to ignore that. We want to maintain our good league record at home and Newcastle will be keen to turn around their fortunes. It will be a difficult game with both sides having plenty to playfor."
