Wasps, with former Wales and Lions scrum-half Rob Howley now on board, outscored the north-easterners two tries to nil on the day, but it was once again the boot of Wilkinson that got the Falcons out of trouble.
Newcastle had to come from behind though after a try on 20 minutes by Wasps’ England Sevens star Josh Lewsey, converted by fly-half Alex King.
Wilkinson responded with three penalties before the break for a 9-7 interval lead, but the Londoners regained the advantage when centre Mark Denney went over six minutes into the second stanza for a try, again converted by King.
Newcastle refused to lie down though, capitalising on the numerous Wasps infringements with five second half penalties from their star man ensuring a morale-boosting win after some less than optimistic pre-season predictions from the pundits – a late consolation penalty from King not enough to give the visitors anything more than a bonus point.
