Wasps win Edgeley Park thriller

10 Oct 2003
Wasps win Edgeley Park thriller

Waters completed his hat-trick within the first 31 minutes, as Wasps raced into a useful 24-12 lead, although the home team did fight back strongly, with former Wallaby back Graeme Bond getting over three minutes later – with Braam van Straaten converting – to narrow the scoreline to 24-19.

Sharks never let Wasps out of their sights, with a double from back-up hooker Matt Cairns keeping the pressure on Wasps.

But the 2002/03 Zurich Premiership champions, who had to rely on the boot of Mark van Gisbergen – who slotted four from four conversions and three penalties on the day – always kept their noses in front, giving them the win and a four-try bonus point.

Van Gisbergen's opposite number, former Springbok Braam van Straaten, kicked three conversions and one penalty, with just one try in it at the end.

The scorers:

For Sale:Tries: Bond, Cairns 2Cons: Van Straaten 3Pens: Van Straaten

For Wasps:Tries: Waters 3, RuddCons: Van Gisbergen 4Pens: Van Gisbergen 3
