Sharks too good for Saracens

19 Apr 2002

Boosted by news that coach Jim Mallinder had signed a two-year contract extension, this was a good win for the Sharks ahead of their European Shield semi-final against Gloucester.

Charlie Hodgson booted three penalties in the first-half to give the home side a 9-0 half-time lead, Saracens woes compounded by Tim Horan being forced off early in the half with a rib injury and having a try disallowed.

Sale opened up a 16 point lead when when winger Mark Cueto pounced on a pass to race away for his ninth Premiership try of the season, Hodgson adding the two points.

Although Kevin Sorrell broke the Saracens duck with a penalty on 50 minutes, Sale scored a crucial second try as substitute flanker Pete Anglesea touched down soon after.
