Sarries coach Wayne Shelford had not minced his words after his side conceded 50 points in defeat to Wasps last time out, but after a midweek earbashing, the Londoners found the necessary grit to stave off the challenge of a dangerous Northampton side.
Saracens opened the scoring inside two minutes with their only try of the day, when an up-and-under from young fullback Adryan Winnan – preferred to Thomas Castaignede – found its way to second-row Stuart Hooper.
As it transpired, that was to be the only try of the afternoon for the home side, with former Leicester fly-half Goode giving the Vocarage Road crowd a fine display of goal-kicking, including some booming penalties from distance.
In all, the England A player slotted six penalties, two drop-goals and a conversion, Sarries’ pack withstanding the sin-binnings of Craig Yandell and Johnny Marsters.
The bulk of Northampton’s points came courtesy of their former England fly-half Paul Grayson, with fullback Nick Beal registering their only try of the day in a game which did not even see them claim a bonus point on their travels.
