Opta Statistics released for Aviva Premiership Rugby

Billy Twelvetrees stole the headlines due to his Gloucester Rugby kicking masterclass on Friday night but another England international was weaving some magic at the same time in south west London.

Marland Yarde produced arguably his best performance in a Harlequins shirt to date and the Opta stats for Aviva Premiership Rugby do much to back that up.

He made a league-high 126 metres, beat eight defenders and pulled off three clean breaks as Quins got off to a flyer with a 26-21 victory over Wasps.

Ollie Lindsay-Hague (110) also topped 100 metres for Quins, who have now won five of their opening day Aviva Premiership Rugby fixtures in a row.

Flanker Luke Wallace is another Harlequin well worthy of a mention as his 24 tackles in Round One was better than the next man in the league – Worcester Warriors' Darren Barry – by five.

Yarde and Twelvetrees missed out on selection for England's final Rugby World Cup squad, and the latter also made his point by scoring 29 points in the 39-27 victory over Newcastle Falcons.

It topped Simon Mannix's previous best for Gloucester in Aviva Premiership Rugby, a 28-point haul against Northampton Saints in 1999.

But Newcastle can take solace from the fact that their attack remains as sharp as ever – having scored at least one try in their last 26 league games.

That is the longest current run in Aviva Premiership Rugby after Northampton Saints ended their own 30-game streak by failing to cross the whitewash at Worcester Warriors.

The key to newly-promoted Worcester's 13-12 triumph was their unrelenting defence, as they achieved the best tackle success rate in Round One (92 per cent).

Bath Rugby edged Exeter Chiefs by 19-17 in a traditionally tense and tight South West derby – nine of the 11 games between the sides in Aviva Premiership Rugby have been settled by ten points or fewer, though Bath have won all six at the Rec.

Elsewhere Saracens started this season in much the same way they ended last year as the defending champions recorded their biggest win over Sale Sharks – 41-3 – since September 2000.

And although it's a defeat Sale will be keen to forget, full-back Mike Haley was a standout as he made 100 metres from a chart-topping 21 carries.

London Irish suffered their sixth consecutive home defeat to Leicester Tigers as they were beaten 28-16 at the Madejski Stadium on Sunday.

Indeed the Tigers seem to have a knack for an opening day victory, having won their last four with an average of 33.5 points scored per game.
