Wasps team to face Yorkshire Carnegie

Director of Rugby Dai Young has named his squad to face Yorkshire Carnegie at the Ricoh Arena on Sunday 21st August, 2.30pm kick off.

The game will be an opportunity for players to test their fitness and skills, while coaches and supporters will also be able to get a glimpse of some of the club’s new signings in action, as Wasps face a strong Yorkshire Carnegie side looking to kick-start their Greene King IPA Championship season.

Ahead of the game, Director of Rugby Dai Young said: "We’re all looking forward to our first hit out this Sunday and we know Yorkshire Carnegie will be a real challenge for us. They’ll have real aspirations of winning promotion to the Aviva Premiership again this season. With Geech [Sir Ian McGeechan] at the helm, Yorkshire Carnegie will certainly look to play rugby. He’s very organised in his approach and a fantastic motivator and coach.

"Obviously, they’ll have a solid set piece to give them the foundation to play from and the performance will be built on strong defence, but they’ll want to attack and play rugby from every area so we need to be ready for that. It will be an entertaining game without a shadow of a doubt, with two sides that really want to play rugby.

"From a Wasps’ point of view, I’m happy with how pre-season has gone so far in terms of the hard work the boys have put in on their fitness and in rugby sessions, but of course time will tell and the proof will be in the pudding. Sunday’s game is a good opportunity to show us exactly where we are, as we try to put all the hard work together on the pitch and give some of our new signings the chance to bed in.

"We’ve named a larger match day squad than usual for this friendly. There are no plans to make wholesale changes at half time, but we don’t want many players to play more than 60 minutes in this first game. That will progress to around 80 minutes in next Saturday’s friendly against Bristol Rugby, to be ready for the Premiership games."

The pre season game is part of Wasps Season Membership packages.
