Wasps name team for Northampton Saints at the Ricoh Arena

Guy Thompson

Director of Rugby Dai Young has named his Wasps side to play Northampton Saints at the Ricoh Arena this Sunday, kick off 3pm.

A re-shuffled backline sees Jimmy Gopperth and Joe Simpson form the half back combination, with Kurtley Beale moving into midfield alongside Elliot Daly. Willie Le Roux switches to fullback, enabling Josh Bassett to return to the wing following strong form this season.

In the pack, Guy Thompson makes his first start since returning from a thumb injury, sustained in January, and Ashley Johnson lines up on the blindside flank with James Haskell rested.

Phil Swainston starts at tighthead and Paul Doran Jones provides cover on the bench, having been brought in on a one-week-loan period from Gloucester Rugby, after injuries to Marty Moore, Jake Cooper-Woolley and Simon McIntyre. Wasps other front row replacements are Tom Cruse and Tom Bristow, who has completed his loan period at Bristol Rugby.

Over 20,000 are expected at the Ricoh Arena this Sunday, when Wasps will also sign the Armed Forces Covenant.

Ahead of the clash against Northampton Saints, Dai Young said: “We’ve needed to put the European disappointment behind us and look ahead quickly as we have a massive game against Northampton Saints this weekend.

“Being forced to get back on the horse a week later is probably the best thing that could happen and the positive is, we still have something meaningful to play for and focus on. We’re in a good place at the top of the league entering the weekend and we want to keep it that way.

“We know Northampton certainly have the capability to come to the Ricoh Arena and beat us if we’re not on our game. They’re on a positive streak, so we’ll have to be back at our best and play the game that we are capable of playing.”

Tickets for Wasps v Northampton Saints can be purchased from wasps.co.uk/tickets and start from £17 for adults while under-10s go free in most categories.

Members of the Armed Forces will also be able to benefit from a buy one, get one free ticket offer for Wasps v Northampton Saints this Sunday, through the Army West Midlands Brigade.
