Scarlets field young side for Welsh derby

Scarlets have named an exciting young side to take on Cardiff Blues at BT Sport Cardiff Arms Park on Friday 14th November, kick-off 7.30pm, in the second round of the LV= Cup campaign.

Coach Ioan Cunningham has made ten changes to the side that faced an experienced Northampton Saints side last week with more of the region's next generation of talent handed golden opportunities in the Welsh derby.

Just as Kieran Hardy and Shaun Jones were awarded with their debuts last Friday fellow regional talents Josh Adams (winger) and Ben Leung (prop) will make their Scarlets debuts on Friday evening.

The Academy graduates follow in the footsteps of last week's debutants Shaun Jones and Kieran Hardy who made their regional debuts against a strong Northampton Saints at Parc y Scarlets last weekend.

With an average age of 21, for Friday night's starting XV, the Scarlets are continuing with their long-standing tradition of developing and nurturing the region's next generation players.

Experienced back row forward Rob McCusker, 28, will lead the side with skilled winger Jordan Williams adding Guinness PRO12 and European rugby experience to the backline.

Scarlets' LV= Cup campaign coach Ioan Cunningham said: "This time of year is about using the squad and giving people opportunities and hopefully we unearth talent like we have in the past.

"It was great for some of the younger players to play against an experienced Saints side. We've learned this week that it comes down to how we close games down and how – as a collective – we deal with more of a kicking game.”

Look ahead to the Welsh derby Cunningham said: "We're expecting a tough derby match. It's a great opportunity for the younger playrs to get experience and there's no better for pressure and intensity than a Welsh derby.

"That's what these guys need, they need to be challenged and exposed at this level to make sure they progress.”
