Newcastle Falcons sign Harrison Orr

Ball-carrying back-five forward Harrison Orr has become Newcastle Falcons’ latest new signing for next season, the former Australia Under-20s international joining from Greene King IPA Championship side Ealing Trailfinders.

Orr, 22, is English-qualified and is relishing the chance of taking his career to the next level at Kingston Park.

He said: "I enjoy the English style of rugby, I love my ball-carrying and putting on big hits, and it is all about being a physical presence.

"The Falcons’ synthetic pitch is nothing new for me because we have a very similar surface down at Ealing. It allows you to play at quite a quick pace, I enjoy that side of things and hopefully I can make a contribution.

"Newcastle have had a lot of the bigger names in rugby here, they are a well-known presence at the top level and I want to be a part of that."

Explaining the route which has brought him to North-East England, the 6 foot 3, 18 stone 1 forward said: "I am originally from Sydney, where I played most of my rugby as a junior through school. I played club rugby in the Shute Shield for West Harbour and was with Sydney Rams in the National Rugby Championship.

"I played for Australia Under-20s but through my British-born dad, who moved to Australia when he was two or three, I was able to qualify for a UK passport. I have spent the past season playing for Ealing in the Championship, I really enjoy it over here and can’t wait now to push on with Newcastle."

Falcons director of rugby Dean Richards was similarly enthusiastic about the move, saying: "Harrison is a strong ball-carrier and a good line-out forward who can play at lock, blind-side flanker or No 8. We look forward to his arrival in the summer and the contribution he can make here."

Orr becomes the Falcons' fourth confirmed signing for next season following the arrivals of Leicester Tigers' Vereniki Goneva, Jersey prop Sam Lockwood and England Sevens scrum-half Sam Egerton.
