Mike Delany joins Falcons from 2015/2016 season

Newcastle Falcons recruitment for the 2015/2016 season continues today as the club confirms New Zealander Mike Delany has completed a move from Clermont Auvergne to Kingston Park on a three year contract.

Born in Rotorua, New Zealand, Delany started his rugby career relatively late after spending much of his childhood sport playing football, making his professional debut in 2005 playing for Bay of Plenty in the NPC.

A versatile and experienced back, with excellent kicking skills and an appreciation on how to use space, Delany is best known for his prowess in the number ten shirt but is equally comfortable playing at Full Back or Centre.

A player with extensive experience, Delany has played Super Rugby for both the Highlanders and the Chiefs, Japanese Top League with Panasonic Wild Knights and the French Top 14 with Clermont. He also earned a cap for New Zealand, following an impressive season in 2009 which saw him emerge as one of the leading points scorers in the Air New Zealand Cup.

Newcastle Falcons director of rugby Dean Richards said: "We're really pleased to have recruited a quality player like Mike. We have had a very good look at him and his style of play and ability to control a game will fit very well with what we are doing as a club.”

"He is pretty low mileage and in good shape and brings some valuable experience from the French Top 14, Super Rugby and of course being involved with the All Black set up on the 2009 Autumn tour.”

Mike Delany said: "I'm excited to be given the opportunity to play for Newcastle Falcons in such a competitive competition as the Aviva Premiership."

"I'm looking forward to bringing my experience playing in New Zealand, Japan and France to Newcastle and to working with the coaches and great young talent in a team that is on the rise."

"My family and I are looking forward to getting settled into life in Newcastle, exploring the region and working on our Geordie lingo!"
