London Welsh confirm signings of Joe Carlisle and Josh Davies

JCarlisle-LW-2904

London Welsh has further strengthened its squad for next season with the signings of half backs Joe Carlisle and Josh Davies.

Fly half Carlisle joins Welsh after a season at Italian club Treviso, where he competed in this season’s inaugural Champions Cup. Carlisle featured against Northampton Saints (twice), Ospreys and Racing Metro in the Champions Cup, and has also made ten appearances for Treviso in this season’s PRO12, scoring 47 points.

A product of the Worcester Academy, Carlisle scored 465 points in 91 appearances for Worcester after making his debut in November 2007 against Bucuresti in the European Challenge Cup. He would help Worcester go on to reach that season’s Challenge Cup final, coming off the bench to land a late conversion in the Warriors’ defeat to Bath.

His most successful season at Sixways came in 2010/11, when racked up 137 points in 27 Championship appearances as Worcester made an immediate return to the Premiership.

He left the Warriors in 2013 to join Wasps, where he scored 120 points in 26 appearances. He joined Treviso in 2014.

Vastly experienced, Carlisle has scored 154 points in 48 Premiership appearances and amassed 205 points in 30 European matches.

Scrum half Davies was part of the hugely impressive Wales U20 side which sensationally reached the IRB Junior World Championship final in 2013 in France.

He joins Welsh from Plymouth Albion whom he joined in April 2014 from Neath, having racked up four tries in just eight appearances for the Principality Premiership club.

Davies came through the Newport Gwent Dragons Academy, playing for the Dragons’ U16 and U18 squads, and he also represented Wales at U18 and U19.

His Principality Premiership debut came for Newport – the first of 24 appearances he made for the club between 2010-12 – and he also played 11 Premiership matches for Bedwas in 2012/13.

London Welsh Director of Rugby Steve Lewis said: "We are delighted to have secured the services of Joe and Josh for next season’s campaign. Joe is hugely experienced, an accurate goal kicker with good distribution and excellent game management, while Josh is an exciting young player who has shown enough in his short career so far to suggest that he will be an excellent addition to our fast developing squad.

"Joe and Josh will add real competition at half back, with Olly Barkley, Rob Lewis and Will Robinson having already committed to the club for next season."

Re-signed for 2015/16:
Seb Jewell, Alan Awcock, Nic Reynolds, James Lewis, Will Robinson, Nathan Trevett, Koree Britton, Nathan Morris, Ben Cooper, Olly Barkley, Rob Lewis, Ben Pienaar and Chris Elder.

Already under contract for 2015/16:
Richard Thorpe, Ben West, Ricky Reeves, Jack Gilding, Eddie Aholelei, Josh McNally and Jesse Liston.

New signings:
Josh Drauniniu (Worcester Warriors), Martyn Thomas (Wasps), Guy Armitage (London Irish), Kieran Murphy (Brive), Ryan Hodson (Jersey), Gus Jones (Wasps), Will Skuse (Bath Rugby), Joe Carlisle (Treviso) and Josh Davies (Plymouth Albion).
