Home-grown shortlist for Steffans Player of the Month

Saints Academy graduates make up the Steffans Player of the Month shortlist for February, Mike Haywood, Jamie Elliott and Tom Stephenson all in the running after an unbeaten month.

An LV= Cup semi-final was secured for the fourth time in six seasons with victory against Wasps and subsequent Aviva Premiership wins over London Irish, Quins and most impressively at Bath stretched their lead at the top to a dozen points.

All three nominees stood out on that afternoon at the Rec, Mike Haywood in particular, the hooker a try scorer in what was the highlight of his own impressive month.

That was a game in which he made 10 of his 26 tackles for the February, as well as seven carries, while his lineout accuracy across the four games finished at 90%.

He was, however, pipped to the man of the match bubbly by the outstanding Jamie Elliott. The winger was his side’s leading metre-maker in January (219), carrying for 128 metres against Bath alone and also beating seven defenders in that game.

His saving tackle on Semesa Rokoduguni – surely one of the best of 2014/15 so far – was among 15 Elliott made in a full 320-minute month.

February was a month in which Tom Stephenson excelled in 2014, but if anything the centre was even better in 2015.

Remarkably, the 20-year-old made 40 tackles without a single miss, also racking up 25 carries for 163 metres having started all four outings. He also beat a joint-high seven defenders and assisted two tries – both for James Wilson.

But while the coaches assemble the list you, the supporters, have the final say!

Any by voting for your February Player of the Month at www.northamptonsaints.co.uk/Steffans, you’ll also be in with a chance of winning a £50 voucher to spend at Steffans’ Abington Square store.

Voting closes at 5pm on Friday, March 13th.

The Steffans Player of the Month winner will take home a TW Steel watch.
