Experience and youth in latest batch of London Welsh re-signings

Rob Lewis, Ben Pienaar and Chris Elder have all signed up to be part of London Welsh’s push next season for an immediate return to the Aviva Premiership.

Today’s announcement takes to 13 the number of London Welsh players to re-sign for the club so far, with seven others already under contract for next season.

Lewis recently became just the thirteenth player to reach the milestone of 100 league appearances for London Welsh, whom he joined in 2009 from Newport Gwent Dragons. Capped by Wales at U18, U19, U20 and Wales 7s, the scrum half was a Grand Slam winner with Wales U19 in 2006. A double Championship winner with the Exiles, Lewis has made 139 appearances for Welsh in all matches, scoring 15 tries.

Pienaar arrived at London Welsh in 2013 after a season at Moseley, but it was at Leicester Tigers that the experienced Number 8 proved his prowess. A graduate of the Tigers’ academy, Pienaar, made 30 first-team appearances for the Welford Road club, including starting Leicester’s Heineken Cup quarter-final victory over Bath in 2009.

Pienaar has scored four tries in 42 appearances for London Welsh in all matches.

Elder recently announced himself on the top flight stage with a try on his Aviva Premiership debut against Wasps. It was his sixth try in his twelfth appearance for the club since joining from Plymouth Albion in 2014. The full back/wing represented England at U18 and came through the academy at Wasps.

London Welsh Director of Rugby Steve Lewis said: "These are three quality players who have a huge amount of experience between them and who have shown that they have the ability to play in the Premiership, so we are delighted to have retained their services for next season’s Championship campaign.

"That 13 of this season’s squad have so far chosen to re-sign to the club is a massive statement about London Welsh’s ambitions for 2015/16. Our squad for next season’s Championship campaign is fast taking shape and we will soon announce some exciting new signings."

Re-signed for 2015/16:
Seb Jewell, Alan Awcock, Nic Reynolds, James Lewis, Will Robinson, Nathan Trevett, Koree Britton, Nathan Morris, Ben Cooper, Olly Barkley, Rob Lewis, Ben Pienaar and Chris Elder.

Already under contract for 2015/16:
Richard Thorpe, Ben West, Ricky Reeves, Jack Gilding, Eddie Aholelei, Josh McNally and Jesse Liston.

*Nathan Trevett, Nathan Morris, Richard Thorpe, Ben West, Seb Jewell, Alan Awcock, James Lewis, Will Robinson, Rob Lewis and Ben Pienaar were all part of the club’s 2013/14 Championship winning season, while Seb Jewell, James Lewis, Nathan Morris and Rob Lewis also featured in Welsh’s Championship success of 2011/12.
