David Denton confident of a bright second season with Bath Rugby

After a year of adjusting to Aviva Premiership Rugby, Scotland No.8 David Denton is settled in at Bath Rugby and looking to build momentum ahead of next season.

The 26-year-old moved south from Edinburgh at the beginning of the season but despite admitting disappointment with Bath’s performances this season, is confident of better things to come.

Zimbabwe-born Denton has made four starts and four substitute appearances in his debut Aviva Premiership Rugby season as Bath enter the final round of games knowing that a potential return to the final will have to wait until next year.

But Denton believes Mike Ford’s men will emerge all the stronger for their difficult campaign – and that the Rec has yet to see him at his best.

“I’m a lot more comfortable now in the city and the team and have had time to settle,” he said.

“The big thing for me when I came here was that Bath is an ambitious club and we know it’s not been good enough this season.

“We’ve got ten losing bonus points, so we’re not too far off, but those little things make a big difference.

“We have to make sure we come out in the right side of those games next season.”

Denton spent seven years at Edinburgh, making 79 appearances for the side and scoring eight tries.

Having been capped 34 times for his country and with Edinburgh not finishing above eighth in the Celtic League for the past five years, Denton moved south for a new challenge ahead of Scotland’s summer tour to Japan.

“When I came here I’d spent seven years in the same system up in Scotland so it was about challenging myself and trying something out of my comfort zone,” he added.

“That was really important to me, and I’m enjoying what I’ve done here so far. We want to build on that for next season now.

“I’ve spoken to the Scotland coach and we’ll find out next week about the summer tour.

“I’d love to be involved and it was really frustrating getting injured when I did during the Six Nations.

“I was with the team for the wins over Italy and France, but to not be able to play is difficult.

“The team is definitely going in the right direction though and that’s why I want to play as well as I can to give myself the best chance of playing.”

Bath’s hunt for a top-six finish and Champions Cup rugby next season ended in Round 21 after the tight loss with Northampton Saints and other results that did not go their way.

They finish their season with a visit from Leicester Tigers at the Rec and the players will be wearing a special jersey to honour two charities.

Denton said: “It was disappointing to lose, because we’ve not won there for 16 years and we had ourselves in an unbelievable position. But in the end we were holding on in defence for so long and they just nicked it.

“This weekend we have got a new jersey for Help for Heroes and the Bath Rugby Foundation, which is an opportunity for us to give something back. They are two great charities and it’s important for us to be able to do something for them.”
