Cardiff Blues’ Jenkins joins Wasp Alex Lozowski in LV= Breakthrough Player Award nominees

ALozowski-Wasps-1311

Cardiff Blues’ forward Ellis Jenkins and Wasps’ fly-half Alex Lozowski are unveiled as LV= Breakthrough Player Award nominees following the conclusion of round two of the competition.

Lozowski is the second Wasp to be nominated in the shortlist, joining team mate Thomas Young thanks to an impressive all-round performance against London Irish last weekend.  The fly-half, who is the son of former England and Wasps player Rob Lozowski, made two clean breaks and beat an impressive six defenders from 11 carries against the Exiles. The 21-year-old spent last season at Yorkshire Carnegie but is a product of the Wasps Academy and will hope his form in the LV= Cup could result in a call up to the Premiership squad. An impressive goal-kicking return of nine successful goals from 11 shots at the sticks will undoubtedly help this cause.

Lozowski stats:

Try Assists: 1
Carries/Metres: 11/85
Clean break: 2
Defenders beaten: 6
Tackles/Misses: 5/1
Goal Kick/Misses: 9/2

Former Wales U20 captain Ellis Jenkins produced a performance that defied his tender years as his side came away from a long trip to Newcastle Falcons with a one-point victory.  The Cardiff Blues back rower was named skipper for the match and showed the qualities which earned him the honour with a relentless defensive effort.  He made an amazing 19 tackles in the match without missing a single attempt and won two turnovers for his side.  He was also key in attack, chipping win with nine carries and managing three defenders beaten as well as a clean break.  In this match, the visitors overturned a half-time deficit of 14 points to render the Premiership side scoreless in the second 40 minutes and triumph 22-21 at Kingston Park.

Jenkins stats:

Carries: 9
Tackles/Misses: 19/0
Lineouts won: 2
Clean breaks: 1
Turnovers won: 2
Defenders beaten: 3

Launched in 2012, the LV= Breakthrough Player Award celebrates and recognises those young players who have stood out in the tournament with previous winners including Jack Nowell, Jonny May and Ollie Devoto.  Using Opta match statistics, a forward and back from each round, along with two players with outstanding overall competition statistics will form a shortlist, which will be submitted to a fan vote on www.lv.com/rugby after Round 4 (06/07/08 February).  The winner will be announced prior to the LV= Cup Final and LV= will donate £1,000 to a grassroots rugby initiative of their choice.

The LV= Breakthrough Player Award is designed to recognise the next generation of young players. For more information on the LV= Breakthrough Player Award visit www.LV.com/rugby
