Billy’s big night breaks Gloucester Rugby records

Aviva Premiership Rugby returned with a bang last night and the standout player was undoubtedly Gloucester Rugby record-breaker Billy Twelvetrees.

Twelvetrees, who lined up at fly-half, scored 29 points in the win over Newcastle Falcons and broke a 16-year Gloucester record in the process.

The 26-year-old topped Simon Mannix’s 28-point haul in the clash against Northampton Saints in 1999 to become the highest-ever Gloucester scorer in an Aviva Premiership Rugby match.

It’s quite a response from Twelvetrees, who missed out on selection for England’s Rugby World Cup squad – and Gloucester director of rugby David Humphreys admits it shows the character of the man.

"I think that's what makes him (Twelvetrees) such an important member of this squad," said Humphreys.

"Nothing seems to fluster him. He came back from the disappointment of the World Cup and brought that energy, enthusiasm and leadership that the squad needs.

"I am delighted for him. We came here yesterday evening (Thursday) and practiced his usual kicking routine and he didn't miss a kick. It's good to see that translated into the way he kicked and played."

Twelvetrees also became one of a select few to kick nine penalties in an Aviva Premiership Rugby match, with his other two points coming via a conversion to Charlie Sharples’ try.

Check out where Twelvetrees ranks up in the tables below:
